Search Network vs Content Network

September 22nd, 2008 by Amit

For those of you who don’t already know, Content network can be a GOLDMINE, if you’re not testing it you’re leaving a lot of money on the table.

Here’s why you may have tested the content network and not had any significant success yet : to succeed big at the content network you absolutely must structure your content network campaigns DIFFERENTLY than search.

Why?

The content network is a fundamentally different beast than search. For search it’s best to have any where from 1 to 30 (MAX) unique keywords per adgroup. And all the keywords in your adgroup should be very tightly related phrase variations.

For content you actually want MORE keywords per adgroup, anywhere from 30-200, and they should NOT be all tightly related phrases, but rather you want a broader array of keywords all related to one theme.

“So Amit are you telling me I need to create seperate campaigns for search and content, and also group my keywords differently?!?”

YES!

Here’s what you need to understand…

To determine which content sites to show your content network ads on Google looks at the overall all theme of the keywords in your adgroup. If you only have one keyword per adgroup (or a very small tightly related group of keywords) for your content adgroups then you’re giving Google a very narrow theme to work with and as a result you’ll get much less traffic, and from my experience, pay more per click.

Properly structuring your content campaigns will result in a HUGE increase in traffic vs just copying your search campaign and running your content traffic through there. I’m not talking about a 5 or 10 percent jump here. More like 3X to 5X!

“But Amit, to group everything separately for search and content like that, that’s a LOT of work!”

Better get busy than, that is if you want to become a super affiliate.

Btw, this is JUST one of many ultra advanced strategies I’ll be revealing (in much more depth than above) in the course I’m releasing with Anik Singal next month. Stuff I’ve never before disclosed on my blog.

So stay tuned!

Great post Amit, I made the mistake you mentioned about running my search optimized campaign on the content network. I learned my lesson!

Any idea as to when you might release your course next month? That alone was the most that I have heard anyone describe how to tackle the content network.

    Thanks!

Will that course deal with Analytics as well? And how to use it fully? Like the “dimension” setting on the referring sites tab? Looking forward to your product release.

Never mind about the “dimension” setting. Got it covered.

I’d take it a step further and say you should also have your “search network” campaign separated out from pure Google search.

    Amit,

You must of got my trackack becuase I linked to you I actually just wrote a post up on this yesterday. For anyone wanting to read it check out http://www.dewittsmedia.com/seo-blogs/affiliates/test-the-content-network/

I have a campaign making around $1,000 to ~$1,500 a week through the content network. I’m still struggling with the search network through this market, but I found out about the content network on accident. I just now took the cap off the daily spend the other day and it has already made $368 in net profit.

The account still had around 3 and half hours to run because I signed my account up through PDT time. The reason I kept the daily spend on for so long was because I was worried about uncapping the spend becuase it was profiting so good and every time I screw with something I get profiting it messes up or quits profiting, but this is not the case on this one :).

There is still of stuff I’m struggling with, but I’m starting to get things making money and plus no one can do SEO better then us :) this will be extremely profitable once we get these sites built up. I just truly believe we can build links faster and better then any one. I also believe we have link resources that a lot of people don’t and that’s why SEO companies contact us for links :).

Anyways SEO and PPC combined YAYA

    Amit,

That’s funny you say more keywords per Ad group I’m going to test that becuase quite honestly we are only using 1 keyword per ad group. I have not messed with it though at all becuase like I was stating every time I get something profiting I screw something up. Generally this is my landing pages I had one landing page converting one day for about 3-4 days and turned around changed the landing page through this one market and now I’m losing money and didn’t save my old landing page. I got pretty pissed off about that one, so I have bothered with it for a few days, but I’m going to give it a try again here in a few days by testing multiple landing pages.

    Hey Amit!
I knew that you are that super-affiliate who’ll be in PPC Classroom 2 - and that’s incredible ’cause I’ve been waiting for this! I’m PPC Classroom student and hope to keep on studing with you. Studying from Jeremy Palmer and you is a real luck - as far as I know you and Jeremy have different PPC strategies.

After I read your post (which is just in time as I’m struggling to see traffic from content network due to 1 keyword per ad group :-) I’ll immediately re-group all my ads for content network.

Awesome and eye opening post. It is a simple concept yet I am sure many of us don’t use this. I know I don’t have separate content network only campaigns but I am going to jump on this today.

Informative but still pretty broad. Do you have any advice on building and maintaining backlinks in order to increase traffic daily.

    Hi Amit,

    I enjoyed the video!

If you don’t mind answering, what are the major differences between PPC Classroom v2 and v1? I believe v1 is already quite comprehensive, and I was wondering what v2 covers that v1 doesn’t?

    Cheers!

    Hi Franklin,

PPC Classroom v1 was authored by Jeremy Palmer. My strategies are very different from his, as you’ll see when you go through the course. :)

    Sincerely,
    Amit
