Back From the Affiliate Summit…Part I

I gotta tell you…every time I go to the Affiliate Summit it just gets better and better. This time was definitely the BEST!

My wife and I flew in on Friday the 22nd (yes, Shilpi was finally able to join me for the entirety of the Summit, which made it really special).

This time I don’t just have pictures to share, but videos as well. A week before I left for ASW in Vegas I bought one of these slick Flip Cameras.

Check out the view from my room in the Rio :

On Saterday I had a opportunity to talk at Anik Singal’s Affiliate Manager LIVE Event. I talked about how affiliate managers can effectively recruit super affiliates, and what super affiliates are looking for in affiliate programs before they decide to promote it.

I hope I really got some points through to all the affiliate managers out there :

  1. Unsolicited Emails and Phone Calls to Super Affiliates DON’T WORK
  2. The Key to Getting and Keeping Super Affiliates is ALL about Developing Relationships FIRST

Later that night my friends and went to dinner at the Voodoo Cafe on the 50th floor of the Rio. The food was good, but the view of the city was even better! :)

Afterwards we all headed to Penn & Teller, which happened to be playing at the Rio.

If you’ve never seen Penn & Teller live I HIGHLY recommend it. Shilpi and I have seen them twice, and this time we had a front row seat! Penn & Teller is a wacky blend of magic and comedy that makes for an unforgettable experience.

That’s all for now, I’m exhausted…Shilpi and I took a red eye back to Boston last night.

I’ll be posting about the Summit for the next several days…about the parties, about my panel, and what I thought about the keynote from Jason Calacanis.

So stay tuned!

  1. Amit,

I think that unsolicited phone calls to affiliates, in general, does not work. I have a buddy who is really trying to get into affiliate marketing but got discouraged/annoyed because of his AM constantly harassing him.

    Hmm,

Would love to hear about the panel, but I am very interested in what you got to say about Calcanis and his keynote. Dont sugar coat it Amit. The stuff is starting to swirl already and since I was unable to attend I am really looking forward to you and Zac’s retorts.

    Amit,

Your panel was the reason I attended Affiliate Summit. I felt that your panel, and the conference in general was exceptional. Thanks for taking the time to to share your thoughts and tactics with the attendees. It is so refreshing to see someone as successful as you helping others acheive their dreams. I hope to be in your shoes helping others some day in the near future.

  4. Some of my co-workers from Agent Interactive where in place in Las Vegas (still are actually) and had lots of good things to say about the discussion where you participated. If you wont’ back off from reading some Swedish, they posted this right after:

They are coming home full of inspiration from the conference.

    Amit:

Do you know the gentleman in the yellow shirt next to Penn? I went to school with him since jr high. Is his name Mike/Michael B.?

    Crazy,

  6. Good post, glad you had a good show at ASW08! Next show lets try to meet up.

To the post: unsolicited anything is tricky, but there is a huge difference between cold calling b2b and cold calling b2c. I can’t stand when I get an unsolicited call about some piece of crap product or service I don’t need at 6:00 when I’m at home. However, as an affiliate network manager who was once a publisher I do call potential affiliates who may or may not know who my company is, but that initial call is how we get business going, if they want to talk about the opportunity then great if not I move on.

  7. Amit,

You are so bang on! This Affiliate Summit was absolutely amazing! The Rio was great too.

I really enjoyed participating on the Ask the Experts session most of all.

Too bad it had to end, so many people to see and was hoping to cross paths with you while there.

  8. I attended both your Affiliate Classroom LIVE session and the Super Affiliate session during the show and particularly appreciated what you had to contribute to the topics at hand. In going back and reviewing my notes, I think most of what I wrote down came from you :p

Thanks for being candid about what Super affiliates want and don’t want – it really helped me as an AM! I hope you stop by ASE 08 in Boston since it’s local to you and share more great info!

  9. Amit says:

    Hi Colin,

I was hoping to meet you in Vegas as well. Drop me an email and I’ll give you my contact info.
