3 Days at Little Palm Island Resort

July 6th, 2008 by Amit

Over 4th of July weekend Shilpi and I spend 3 days on Little Palm Island, one of the most AMAZING resorts in the world, located right in the Florida Keys.

Little Palm Island Resort is a tiny little island that’s only accessible by boat or float plane. The idea is total seclusion: there’s no alarm clock, no cell phone usage allowed in public areas, and no TV! The idea is just to relax and unwind!

The first night we had a romantic dinner on the beach :

The food was incredible. I had some grilled fish that they had just caught that day.

The following day we went on a snorkeling tour on a coral reef out in the open ocean. I’ll be honest, I was scared at first, I’ve never been snorkeling out in the open ocean before. It didn’t help that the water was a little choppy.

However, after I overcame my fear the view was absolutely STUNNING. I saw at least 10 types of fish & coral, barracudas, and a sting rays. I wish I had pictures to share, however, I didn’t have an underwater camera on me.

Later that day we had a chance to explore the island and see : a lifesize chessboard, a zen garden, the tide coming in, and some of the wildlife that inhabits the island.

Check it out :

The following day we went out for flatsboat fishing. I’ve never been fishing before in my life so I was more than excited when I caught a hammerhead shark.

No joke :

I won’t bludgeon you with what a weekend at this resort will cost you, let’s just put it this way, there NO WAY I would be going to Little Palm Island Resort if I was still working at MIT.

Funny how my affiliate world keeps colliding with my marine biology world. I spent many summers teaching at Seacamp on Big Pine Key, about a mile across the water from where you were staying. You could probably see it from where you were and no doubt you saw their flattop boats whizzing by, taking students to the reef. We used to call Little Palm Island, “Sheriff’s Island” and if you ever happen to see the very old black and white film, “PT 109″, it was filmed there. Glad you enjoyed it there…a very special area.

That’s awesome! That chess board makes you look tiny. I was just in Miami at the first of June and that pic of the hammerhead makes me wish I had not backed out on the fishing trip we were going to take. Be seeing you in a month in Boston on your panel!

Nice Pics Amit. Are you an affiliate with Revenue Gateway. I see you wear their shirts quite often. If they are a reliable network please let me know as I would like to sign up with them.

Good to see you’re enjoying nature..

As much as I like to enjoy a good hotel, there’s no place for me to really come to rest as nature itself. Once a year I always go camping with a good friend of mine and that’s the only holiday where I don’t have access to my e-mail and stats :) This is always the best holiday, as it really refreshes me and fills me with mental energy when I get back.

Doctors have to go on a mandatory holiday 8 times a year, because their professional life is so stressful. Luckily for them; Time away for them is really time away.

For Affiliate Marketeers this is so much more complicated. But you’re setting a good example here :)

Looks like a cool place. The first fish I ever caught was also a shark off the coast of Fort Lauderdale. It was a Maco, about 5 or 6 ft long. It scared the crap out of me when that head came up out of the water with all those teeth. I yelled CUT THE LINE!

The guys I was with wanted to bring it on the boat and the boat was only 18 ft. That thing would have gnawed our legs off.

What a coincidence! I work for Noble House Hotels, which owns Little Palm and that really is a magical place. Right now I am the Director of Rooms at The Grove Isle Hotel in Coconut Grove, very close to your new apartment! As you can probably guess, I am trying to get out of the 9-5 rat race but while I am still here let me know if you need anything. It will be a pleasure to meet you! :)

It looks like a nice lifestyle, but what about friends? Do you know anybody down there in Florida, or is it just you and your wife with no social life?

Thanks for not bludgeoning us Amit ;), but I checked the rates to this resort and its a bit expensive, but nothing to hang yourself over… On par with a nice hotel in NYC.

    Hi Amit,

Really glad to see you liked it and the pictures are awesome! Last time I was in the keys I caught a hammerhead shark as well. There is NO WAY I would hold it up for a camera shot though.
Man, weren’t you worried it would bite you?

    Amit,
That sounds like the perfect get-a-way to me! Eating by the water, snorkeling and relaxing are a perfect vacation. I stayed on Palm Island, it is close to Sarasota, we had to put our car on a barge to get over to the island. As soon as you cross over the water it is a whole different pace of life.
